Why Proprioception Matters in Hypermobility Rehabilitation

When we think about hypermobility, most people immediately think of joints that move “too much.” But one of the lesser-known challenges of hypermobility is something called proprioception—your body’s ability to sense where it is in space.
Proprioception is often referred to as your body’s internal GPS. It allows you to move without constantly looking at your hands or feet, helps you maintain balance, and enables your muscles to respond quickly to stabilize your joints. For many people living with hypermobility, this system doesn’t function as effectively as it should.
Research has shown that individuals with hypermobility frequently have reduced joint position sense and impaired proprioception compared to those without hypermobility. This can contribute to decreased balance, poor coordination, increased clumsiness, joint instability, and a greater risk of injury.
So what does this mean for rehabilitation?
It means that strengthening exercises alone may not be enough. A successful rehabilitation program often includes strategies that improve the body’s awareness of movement and joint position while providing additional sensory input to the nervous system.
One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is through external support and tactile feedback.
Tactile feedback provides your brain with extra information about where your body is positioned, helping improve movement quality and joint control. Depending on your individual needs, your physical therapist may incorporate tools such as:
- Resistance bands (Therabands)
- Springs
- Light weights
- Pillows or bolsters
- Balance equipment
- Hands-on manual cueing during exercise
These tools aren’t simply making an exercise more challenging—they’re giving your nervous system additional information to improve motor control and stability.
This is why rehabilitation for hypermobility should always be individualized. Two people with the same level of joint flexibility may have very different proprioceptive abilities, symptoms, and functional limitations. Your treatment plan should address not only strength but also body awareness, balance, coordination, and movement quality.
The goal isn’t to stop you from moving—it’s to help you move with greater confidence and control.
As proprioception improves, many people notice that everyday activities become easier. They may experience better balance, improved coordination, fewer episodes of joint instability, and greater confidence during exercise and daily life.
